I’m bringing back my negotiation tips this week because negotiation is all about solving conflict – a negotiation wouldn’t be necessary if the conflict didn’t exist. If you’re having difficulty understanding someone or uncomfortable with engaging in conversation right now I hope that today’s tip will help you shift your mindset enough to engage more productively. I’m going to continue to #amplifymelanatedvoices alongside my regular content so if you’re not comfortable with that, especially after today’s tip, then perhaps I’m not the one to help you.
Day 6 of my #40to40 is about MINDSET. The word #negotiation can make people fearful and assume that it’s going to be as combative as a boxing match. But it’s simply a discussion between 2 people. It’s an opportunity to discover something about one another. Now more than ever, go into your discussions with the mindset that you want it to be cooperative and productive. What can you discover about the other person? What can they discover about you that would make this conflict go away?
It’s ok to be uncomfortable. Just pause to check your mindset and consider how you can make it cooperative. They’ll mirror your behaviour and do the same.
